10 Reasons Why I Love The Farmer’s Market – Juggling Real Food and Real Life

I don’t keep it a secret.  I LOVE my farmer’s market.  Here are 10 reasons why I think you should find yourself a farmer’s market.  If you are reading this at the time that I originally wrote this, there are just a few weeks left of the market season.  So, don’t delay!  Do a Google search and find the market closest to you.  Fall is a great time to check the markets out.  The Fall harvest is in!

1.  It’s a lot more fun shopping out in nature than in a stuffy grocery store.  Nature is very therapeutic for this Juggling Mom!

2.  There is a greater variety of produce at the markets than in the grocery store.  Since the
produce is based on the growing season, the selections can change each week.  Stock up and freeze or can your favorites.

3.  Children actually like to go to the market.  I’ve had a blast teaching my children about food while holding hands and strolling through the market.  I even had the opportunity to walk through the market with my college son and his girlfriend when they were home for Labor Day.  Talk about Quality Time!

4.  Lemonade  (A weekly ritual for the kids and I.  Yum!)

5.  You actually get to meet Farmers.  How cool is that?  I know who is growing my food!

6.   Great way to get out and meet your neighbors and other folks who have the same passion about food that you do.

7.  Locally grown food actually lasts longer in the fridge since it didn’t have to come across the country in a truck.   It really does taste fresher.

8.  Children (and husbands) are more likely to eat food that they pick out. I’ve tested this theory with my picky eaters.  They still don’t eat everything just because they picked it out, but they do eat quite a bit more than before the Market Season.

9.  The people who work the various stands know a lot about food.  They can tell you how it was grown, how to store it at home, and how to prepare it.  I’ve learned so much this Summer by just asking questions.  What a resource to have!

10.  Great “Resources” become great friends.  My friend Diana at The Tea and Honey Company was a little round at the start of Summer.  Tee! Hee!  Each week she grew a little bit, until the day that there was a beautiful baby girl at her stand.  We have lots in common like bunches of kids, red hair and a love of honey.  I am thrilled to have met her at this time in our lives!  She is also a great resource on all things honey and herbal teas.  She introduced me to Chia Seeds.  Did you know that you can use them in recipes and not just those darn Chia Pets?  They have wonderful health benefits.

Well……….that doesn’t even come close to all of the reason why I love my Farmer’s Market.  Maybe I’ll have to do a 2nd list in the future.  Make sure you subscribe at the right so you don’t miss our next episode.  Oh, don’t forget to like our Facebook page too.  Until then………See you at the Market!
