Just One More Day – Juggling Real Food and Real Life

One thing you may not know about me is that I am obsessed with time.  I like to fill my days with as much activity as possible and talk endlessly about how “fast time goes by” and how “I need more time.”  If you have known me for a while then I know you have heard me say, “There just isn’t enough time.”  I have clocks all over my house to keep track of time.  My husband and kids buy me watches for Mother’s Day to give me…………”more time.”  I have lots of scrapbooks to track the passing of time with my children.  I still can’t believe I am the mother of a 20-year-old.  How do I keep my younger ones from growing up that quick?

If I could buy more time…………I would have bought a lot of it.  However, time is something you just can’t buy with money.

They have my heart

With 2014 quickly approaching, I have had occasion to reflect even more than usual. Facebook does that cool thing where you can see 2013 through the pictures you posted.  I see smiling faces looking back at me.  Faces that want to squeeze every little bit of life out that they can.  They want to run, play, and dance.  I want to give them as much joy of life as I can.

You see………this is what my real food journey is all about.  I want to buy my family just one more day if I can.  I want them to have just one more day where they don’t have to worry about chronic diet-related illness, infertility, or cancer.  Is eating a real food diet a guarantee that they will never encounter illness?  Certainly, not.  But, that is not going to stop me from trying my darnedest.  Every time I feel like giving up, I remind myself exactly what is on the line here.  It breaks my heart to imagine my daughter discussing her infertility problems that were caused by the GMO foods that I fed her.  I imagine the illness that comes with obesity and other food additives that are known to cause cancer.  I promise to stand by my children no matter what, but if I can buy them just one more day……………I push on cutting carrots, and chopping onions, reading labels, and stirring pots of homemade soups to make sure I am doing my part to give them just one more day.  There are times that I am tired and looking for an easy solution, but I chop on.

I must be striking a nerve with some people because I am starting to get negative comments along with all of the positive.  “Don’t your children miss (insert junk food item here)?”  “Aren’t you hungry eating all of that healthy food all of the time?”  “You must be rich if you are eating healthy food.”  And the most hurtful to me…………”What, are you too good to eat like we do?”

I hear these comments and I chop on hoping to buy just one more day for my family.  One more day that we can be happy and healthy.

The Real Food Experience 2014

If you are ready to take this journey with me……..you will want to check out The Real Food Experience 2014.  I promise this will be 4 weeks that will change your life for the better and for good.  I’m not talking about a fad diet.  I’m talking about a lifestyle change that will make you feel better now and down the road.  It is possible even with a busy family schedule.  It is also possible with a small grocery budget.    All it takes is the commitment to work at buying just one more day.

If you are interested in joining The Real Food Experience 2014, I am working on getting everyone added to our special Facebook group.  The group is by invitation only so I will need your email address.  You can leave it in the comments below or send me your facebook email address at:  jugglingrealfoodandreallife@gmail.com.  I hope you will join me regardless of where you are on your real food journey.  This group is for everyone.

Sadly, the haters are out there. We are trying to both eat real food AND keep our food budget as low as possible… quite the difficult set of priorities to juggle!

But you know what, in some ways, it works great… I mean, my kids don't eat sugary boxed cereal for breakfast… it's homemade oatmeal… yes, pretty much every day. No, they don't get bored (although they love it on days I change things up.) It's better for them, and it's a LOT cheaper! (Heck, my teen boys could eat a box of cold cereal by themselves in one sitting!)

I'd love to be added: ellahalligan @ live.com…

Thank you Elisabeth for your positive statements. I don't have a huge food budget since I am also paying for my oldest son to go to college. I can relate to your tight budget. I've sent you an invite to the Real Food Experience FB page. I think there is a lot we can learn from each other.

I read this a few days ago- I think what you are doing is commendable. While we don't necessarily look at things the same way, I find your site to be informative and not "preachy" in regard to healthy living. Also, it's YOUR family, not theirs. People need to remember that there's a real person behind the computer screen, living a real life. Keep up the great work- you inspire me to keep cutting out foods from a box and a can and cooking fresh as much as possible! (desserts, well, those are another story. But at least they are special occasion and not every day) 🙂

Oh Nicole……we still like our desserts. LOL! I just cut out the artificial ingredients. Thank you so much for your kind words. If I ever get too preachy, let me know. That is so not what I want to be. Gentle reminders is more my style.

I will never understand why people get their knickers in a bunch over things people decide to do for their own families. It's your choice, not their's. I think you are doing the best possible thing for your family. Chrystal @yumeating.com

"Knickers in a bunch" I love it! It is funny, isn't it? It's not like I am making them eat glass. I'm feeding them fruits and vegetables. Horrible!

🎉 Juggling Real Food and Real Life is officiall 🎉 Juggling Real Food and Real Life is officially a teenager! 🎉

13 years ago, I hit publish on my very first blog post. Back then, my kids were still young, and I was deep in the “mom life” of packing lunches, rushing to practices, and trying to figure out how to keep real food on the table without losing my mind. 🍎🥦

Fast forward to today, and here I am—a grandmother! 👵💖 Life looks a little different now, but the heart of this community hasn’t changed. It’s still about juggling the busyness of life, making space for the people we love, and finding joy in real food (and real moments).

I never imagined that this little corner of the internet would become such a special part of my life for over a decade. Thank you for being here—whether you’ve been with me since the beginning or just found me recently. You are the reason this space is still going strong. 💕

Here’s to 13 years of memories, lessons, recipes, and laughter… and to many more ahead! 🥂

Drop me a comment and tell me how long you’ve been hanging out here—I’d love to know!

Young dancers need more than sparkly costumes and strong muscles—they need the right fuel to stay focused and energized all class long. 💃🥗

Balanced meals with carbs + protein + healthy fats are the secret to avoiding mid-class crashes and powering through those long practices. And don’t forget water—hydration is just as important as the food they eat! 💧

👉 In Part 1 of my new series on Fueling Young Dancers with Real Food, I’m sharing simple tips and snack ideas to help dancers shine at the studio.

What’s your dancer’s favorite pre-class snack? 🍎🥜
