Food Revolution Day Update – Juggling Real Food and Real Life

Welcome back everyone!  It is so nice to see you again.  Today, I thought I would take a little break from the norm and update you on my Food Revolution Day planning.  In addition to writing this blog, I volunteer my extra (that’s funny) time as a Volunteer Ambassador for Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.  I have had the opportunity to participate in monthly challenges with my Food Revolution partners from around the world.  This has been an amazing experience for me because it has really opened up my eyes to food around the world.

Food Revolution Day
Let’s start with some fast facts about Food Revolution Day…………Food Revolution Day is officially Friday May 16, 2014.  There will be events held around the world all weekend.  My event is on Saturday.
Food Revolution Day is a day of global action to keep cooking skills alive. It’s about celebrating the importance of cooking good food and raising awareness of how it impacts our health and happiness. We believe that starts with getting kids excited about food by making cooking fun and inspiring a love of food that will last a lifetime.
Food Revolution Day is a campaign by the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation in the UK and USA, and The Good Foundation in Australia. To date, 74 countries have taken part and over 900 ambassadors are championing our cause worldwide.
Food Revolution Day
Learning how to cook from scratch is one of the most valuable skills a child can ever learn. This knowledge used to be passed down from generation to generation, but now with an over- reliance on unhealthy convenience foods, millions of people lack the confidence and even the most basic skills to cook for themselves and their families.  By educating children about food in a fun and engaging way, we’re equipping them and the generations to come, with the skills they need to live healthier lives.
We want as many people as possible to get involved in showing children how important it is to understand where food comes from, how to cook it and how it affects our bodies – it can be as simple as helping a child to cook a meal from scratch or getting them to try a new ingredient.

2014 is the third year for Food Revolution Day and my first year to plan an event. The program is growing and raising awareness for the need to keep cooking skills alive. Children and adults are both discovering food in a whole new way.  My local event will be a fun interactive event where we will be teaching how to make pasta from scratch.  I’ve invited our area Girl Scouts to the event and the response has been very positive.  I’ve got my planning committee together and we have booked our venue.  Now………..we just need to get our donations going.  I’ll keep you posted on how things are going.
Have you heard about Food Revolution Day?  Are you aware of any local events in your area?  Let’s get kids excited about cooking!  What cooking skills are you able to teach your children?  Share your cooking stories here and we can pass along all of your great advice to other families.

I think the work you're doing with the Food Revolution is awesome! As a fellow organizer, I think the work they (and you) are doing is great to bring cooking back into our homes. I'm slowly but surely cooking more, usually simple but healthy recipes!

Thanks Lindsay. Your kind words mean a lot to me. Simple recipes are all you need. I'm not much of a cook, but I really do love preparing real food meals for my family and having my children help me out in the kitchen. It's kind of a stress reliever for all of us. Fast food was really stressing us out since they never got our orders right. Anything prepared at home is going to be healthier and we all feel better as a result.

I taught my oldest son to cook and now he is a way better cook than I am. I'm now taking the time to teach my middle son as he will be moving out in September for school. I've started already with my daughter because she is vegetarian and often eats something other than what I make for the rest of the family. I think it's one of the best gifts you can give your kids!

I haven't heard of that day up here in Canada, I will have to see if I could get something like that organized! Great idea to get the girl scouts involved!

This is a great movement and I strongly believe it's so important to teach your kids how to prepare their own food. Staying away from the pre made stuff is what will keep my perpetually hungry girls on the thinner side.

I've heard of this, but I have no idea if there is anything near us that we could attend. I'll have to look into it. My youngest one is the only one that LOVES to cook and we decided to try a least one new (non-packaged) food item a month that we haven't eaten before. This month is some type of Korean melon. I don't even know the name.

I haven't heard of this. It's on my husband's birthday so I don't think I'd be able to try anything this year.

I'm teaching all three of my children to cook. It's a skill every parent should teach to their child(ren). I am familiar with the Food Revolution Day but has never participated. You're event sounds like great. Good luck to you.

I love to hear that you are teaching your children to cook Nicky! That is the single best thing you can do to teach your children to make healthy food choices. I bet you are a heck of a teacher, too.

I haven't heard of this before, but it sounds right up my alley. I was once fortunate enough to attend a week long Slow Food conference and it was amazing! Right now I'm trying to figure out how to grow my own food in an apartment with no balcony.

Thanks for sharing the news Marla. One of our Ambassador goals this month was to let 5 people know about Food Revolution Day. I think I can check that off the list. Thanks for helping in this important mission of keeping cooking skills alive.
