Welcome back to the Real Food Experience Challenge! Each week, we tackle a small, doable step toward transforming how we feed our families. This week’s challenge is one of the most eye-opening steps in the real food journey: learning to read food labels. You can join us this week and get caught up by checking out our other weekly challenges. Here is the Week 1 Challenge
Why Food Label Reading Matters
One of the first things I discovered on my real food journey was how tricky food packaging can be. Buzzwords like “all-natural” or “made with whole grains” often sound healthy but don’t tell the whole story. The truth is in the ingredient list and nutrition label — that’s where we focus this week.
This Week’s Real Food Challenge
Your goal: Read every label before placing it in your cart. Look for real food wins and learn to spot sneaky ingredients to avoid.
Step 1: Check the Ingredient List
Short is sweet: Fewer ingredients often mean less processing.
- Can you pronounce it? Real food should sound like food.
- Watch for added sugars (cane syrup, fructose, maltodextrin).
- Spot artificial additives (dyes, preservatives, MSG).
Step 2: Understand the Nutrition Facts Panel
- Serving size reality check — are you eating one serving or three?
- Natural sugar vs. added sugar — minimize the added.
- Sodium surprise — compare brands for better choices.
- Look for fiber and protein to help you feel full and satisfied.
Step 3: Look Past Marketing Claims
Terms like “light,” “natural,” or “made with whole grains” don’t guarantee real food. Flip the package and read the facts yourself.
Real Life Tips for Success
- Practice makes progress: At first, reading every label feels slow, but it gets faster as you learn your go-to brands.
- Get kids involved: Make it a game — who can find the first ingredient?
- Don’t stress perfection: This is about learning and improving, not tossing everything today.
