Welcome to Week 1 of the Real Food Lunchbox Series!
Mornings are… a lot. Between getting everyone dressed, remembering the permission slip, and making sure homework is actually in the backpack, packing lunch can feel like one more impossible task.
But what if I told you that packing real food lunches doesn’t have to be stressful — or time-consuming? In fact, with just a few smart supplies and a simple plan, you can send your kids off with healthy, delicious lunches (and maybe even sip your coffee while it’s still warm).

This week, we’re diving into how to make real food lunches easy — even for the busiest of mornings.
What Do I Mean by “Real Food Lunches”?
When I say real food, I’m not talking about complicated recipes or spending hours in the kitchen.
I mean food that’s recognizable, nourishing, and made from real ingredients — things like:
- Fresh fruit and veggies
- Whole grains
- Lean proteins
- Simple homemade snacks or minimally processed store-bought options
Basically, food your great-grandmother would recognize… with a modern mom twist.
Step One: Gather Your Tools
The right supplies make all the difference. Soggy sandwiches and leaky yogurt cups are just not it.
Here’s what I keep in my kitchen for easy, real food lunch packing:
- Ziplock Divided Containers: My personal favorite and the one I still use. It’s affordable, durable, and makes portioning out food simple.
- Reusable Snack Bags: For pretzels, grapes, and trail mix.
- Mini Sauce or Dip Containers: Perfect for hummus, ranch, or peanut butter.
- Silicone Muffin Cups: Great for separating foods or holding small bites.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Because hydration matters — and it saves a ton of money on juice boxes.
- Ice Packs: Keep food fresh until lunchtime. The Pack-It freezable lunch bag is also a favorite of ours. The whole lunchbox goes into the freezer. Easy peasy!

Step Two: Simplify the Morning Routine
Here’s my not-so-secret trick: don’t wait until morning to pack lunch.
Even just 10 minutes the night before makes a huge difference. Huge! Did I say huge??
Try this routine:
- Pack right after dinner. You’re already in the kitchen, and cleanup is easier. Oftentimes, dinner tonight becomes tomorrow’s lunch anyway.
- Use a lunch-packing station. Keep your supplies and favorite foods in one spot.
- Keep grab-and-go foods prepped. Wash grapes, cut carrots, and portion snacks ahead of time.
When everything has a place, lunch packing goes from “ugh” to “done.”
Step Three: Think Simple, Not Fancy
Forget Pinterest perfection. Kids just need food that’s fresh and tasty.
A few of my go-to combos:
- Turkey and cheese wrap + fruit + veggie sticks + dip
- Whole grain pasta salad + yogurt + berries
- Leftover chicken + brown rice + broccoli
- Homemade snack plate: crackers, cheese cubes, cucumber rounds, and apple slices
Real food lunches don’t have to look fancy — they just have to work.
Funny story: So many times over the years the kids would come home and tell me how impressed the lunch ladies were with the lunches they brought to school. Everything was open and ready to go for them making their life easier. I was keeping it simple, and the lunch ladies thought it was fancy.
