I’ve got something a bit different for you today. Meeghan from Sight and Sound Reading is our next finalist in the Juggling Real Food and Real Life Smoothie Competition. She is a super sweet momma of 5 kids who has devoted her life to teaching children to read. Check out her recipe here and then head over to her blog Sight and Sound Reading to check out more wonderful ways to help your children with their reading. There are some really cool ideas. I’ve used some of them with my kids. The best part………..they don’t even know they are learning.
Now here is Meeghan…………….
from Sight and Sound Reading.
My blog helps to teach children to read for free. We also help
struggling readers learn to read better and learn to like reading. Lastly
we offer tips and ideas to help parents, teachers and caregivers make learning
to read fun. Today I thought we would have some fun with fresh and frozen
fruit. In the process, we will learn about the letter F and the sound
that the f makes.
nothing really special about our smoothie recipe – really you can use any
smoothie recipe you wish. What makes our smoothie magical is that it
helps in teaching the ‘f’ sound. Ffffffff!
Fun with Fresh and Frozen Fruit Smoothie
My 8 and 6 year old helped me with this activity. We took out the
blender and all the ingredients. We are lucky to have an organic
blueberry farm minutes from our home -so, we had fresh blueberries! We
also took out out some frozen fruit – including raspberries, bananas
(that were starting to brown too early that we had frozen), mangoes,
pineapples, strawberries, and peaches. We also have a peach farm close
to us -so, we actually had some frozen peaches from last year’s crop. We
love to use frozen fruit in our smoothies because then we don’t have to add
ice! In addition to our fresh and frozen fruit, we also added milk and
yogurt.
happens! We discuss the letter f, and the sound the f makes. We
practice making the sound that the f makes…fffffff! F as in fun with fresh
and frozen fruit. FFFFFF. THEN,
we press the on button of the blender. To cover up the noise from the
blender, we all make the noise that the f makes: FFFFFFF.
Everyone now – let me hear you: FFFFFFFFF.
finished, we sample our fresh and frozen fruit fun. We all agree that it
is fabulously fantastic. FFFFFF good!
Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame. She also has
her Masters in Special Education from Assumption College. She
re-discovered her mother’s reading program when trying to teach her daughter to
read. She was amazed at how easy it was to teach her, and she loved that
her daughter asked to practice reading every day. Immediately she knew it
would be great for ALL children, especially those who struggle to learn to
read. She was inspired to help her mother reach more children with her
program. Meeghan is married and has five children. Aside from
spending time with her family, she loves supporting her alma mater by attending
the University of Notre Dame athletic events.Big thank you to Christina for having me today and to you for stopping by to check out my recipe! Please, leave a comment to vote for my recipe in this competition.

My kids love smoothies! I need to lose weight and make smoothies instead of eating lunch! We do green ones where we add a couple of handfuls of spinach.
Smoothies are a great way to pack a lot of nutrition into one cup.
