Homemade Taco & Chili Seasoning for Real Life Flavor

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

If you’ve ever reached for a packet of taco seasoning only to realize you’re out—don’t panic! This simple homemade taco and chili seasoning mix comes together in minutes and is made with pantry staples you probably already have on hand. It’s the perfect way to skip the additives, lower the sodium, and make dinner taste amazing without running to the store.

At Juggling Real Food and Real Life, we’re all about real ingredients and easy wins. This mix checks both boxes. Once you make it, you’ll never go back to the little packets again.

Why Make Your Own Seasoning?

We did some digging, and here’s what we found:

  • Store-bought seasoning packets can pack 300–430 mg of sodium per serving and often include fillers like cornstarch, maltodextrin, and “natural flavors.”
  • Homemade seasoning gives you control. Want it spicy? Add more red pepper flakes. Need it milder for the kids? Skip the heat. Watching your salt? Use less sea salt or leave it out completely.

Homemade seasoning tastes fresher, smells incredible, and lets you feel good about what’s going into your family’s dinner.

The Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 tbsp chili powder
  • 1½ tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp sea salt (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp dried oregano
  • ¼ tsp red pepper flakes

Directions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a small bowl or jar.
  2. Stir or shake well to mix.
  3. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months.

To use:

  • Add 2 tablespoons of seasoning per pound of ground beef, turkey, or chicken.
  • For chili, start with 1–2 tablespoons and adjust to taste.
  • Want a saucier taco filling? Stir in ⅔ cup water after adding the seasoning to your browned meat and simmer until thickened.

Flavor Notes

This blend brings that cozy, smoky taco flavor your family loves. The chili powder and cumin give it warmth, the oregano adds depth, and the red pepper flakes bring just a touch of heat. It’s also perfect for sprinkling on roasted veggies, adding to soups, or even mixing into Greek yogurt for a quick dip.

Real Life Bonus: It’s Budget-Friendly

Once your spice rack is stocked, homemade seasoning costs just a few cents per batch—way cheaper than those $1.50 packets. And since you’re measuring from what you already own, you can whip it up anytime. No more emergency grocery runs at 5 p.m.

Busy Mom Tip

Double or triple the recipe and store it in a cute mason jar. Label it “Taco Night Mix” and keep it in your spice cabinet. When you’re juggling work, homework, and soccer practice, this little jar will feel like magic.

The Real Food Difference

Real food doesn’t have to be fancy. It’s just about knowing what’s in your meals and feeling confident about feeding your family well. This taco and chili seasoning is a small but powerful swap—one that keeps your dinners real, flavorful, and stress-free.

Make it once. Love it forever.
