The Myth of Balance — and What Moms Really Need Instead
Let’s be honest: if “balance” means having a perfectly clean house, kids who eat kale without complaint, and a boss who never schedules meetings at 4:59 p.m., then I’m out.
Most days my version of “balance” looks a lot more like juggling flaming torches while standing on one foot and wondering if anyone remembered to switch the laundry.
And that’s exactly why I wanted to start this new series — Real-Life Balance for Working Moms.

Because balance isn’t about doing everything. It’s about figuring out what really matters right now, letting the rest go (without the guilt), and creating rhythms that actually work for real life. You know — the life where dinner sometimes comes from a drive-thru and your “me time” happens in the car between soccer practice and the grocery store.
This series is for the moms who are working hard — in every sense of the word — and just want to feel like they’re doing enough.
Spoiler alert: You are.
Why “Balance” Doesn’t Really Exist
We’ve all heard it: “You just need better balance!”
But let’s be honest — if balance means everything in our lives sits neatly in its place (work, kids, home, health, relationships, self-care — all in harmony), then we’re set up to fail before we start.
Real-life balance isn’t symmetrical. It’s seasonal.
Some weeks, work gets more of you. Some weeks, family does. Some days, you might even remember to drink water and stretch (go you!).
The truth? Balance isn’t a static, picture-perfect thing. It’s more like riding a bike — constantly adjusting, leaning one way, then the other, to stay upright.
And sometimes you fall off. That’s okay too.

What Moms Really Need Instead
Instead of chasing “balance,” what if we focused on alignment — making sure our energy, time, and attention match what matters most right now.
That might mean saying no to extra projects at work this month.
Or choosing frozen veggies over fresh because it saves you ten minutes (which you can spend reading a bedtime story).
It might even mean letting your house stay a little messy so you can finally sit down for five minutes with your coffee while it’s still hot.
Real-life balance is messy, flexible, and full of grace. It’s the in-between space where you give yourself permission to be human.
