Welcome back, busy moms! You’ve already made it through two weeks of the Real Food for Busy Moms Challenge — and that’s something to celebrate. You’ve organized your kitchen, cleaned out your pantry, and maybe even swapped a few sodas for something a little more real. You’re doing amazing! And if you don’t know what I’m talking about you probably want to start at the beginning. You can find that by clicking here.
Now, we’re moving into a week that completely changed the way my family eats: reading food labels.
I know — it doesn’t sound exciting. But once you learn how to read what’s really in your food, you’ll never look at your grocery cart the same way again.
How It All Started for Me
When my family first began our real food journey, I was convinced we were eating pretty well. Sure, we had our drive-thru nights, but we also bought “whole-grain” bread, “low-fat” yogurt, and “fruit” snacks. That counts, right?
Well… not exactly.
One day, I decided to actually flip those boxes and bags around — and wow. I found ingredients I couldn’t pronounce, dyes that didn’t belong in nature, and a shocking amount of sugar hiding behind names like corn syrup, maltodextrin, and evaporated cane juice.
That’s when it hit me: I wasn’t just feeding my family food… I was feeding them a chemistry experiment.
That’s the moment everything started to change.
This Week’s Challenge: Read Every Label
Your challenge this week is simple (but powerful):
Read the ingredient labels on everything you eat.
Don’t stress about changing everything right now. This week is about awareness. Once you start reading, you’ll see just how sneaky the food industry can be. My husband and I still look at labels and are shocked to see artificial colors in places where we thought there was no color and sugar in almost everything. It’s crazy! We often find 3 different sugars in one box.
Here’s what to look for:
Ingredients to Watch Out For:
- Added sugars: corn syrup, dextrose, cane juice, maltose, sucrose
- Artificial dyes: Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 1
- Preservatives: BHA, BHT, sodium benzoate
- Unpronounceable ingredients: If you can’t say it, you probably don’t need to eat it
- “Health” buzzwords: Low-fat, diet, sugar-free — these often mean “chemically enhanced”
What You Do Want:
- Simple, real ingredients you recognize
- Short ingredient lists
- Whole foods at the top of the list
- Labels that read like a recipe, not a lab report
How to Shop Smarter
Once you start label-reading, your grocery trips might take a few minutes longer (at first). But that time is so worth it!
Try this:
- Shop the outer edges of the store — that’s where the real food lives.
- Pick up one or two new “clean” replacements each week.
- Don’t toss everything in your pantry at once. Just start swapping gradually. Food is expensive. I get it.
Remember: Progress, not perfection. Even small improvements make a big difference.
The Real Food Wake-Up Call
It’s easy to think that convenience foods are our only option when we’re juggling kids, sports, school, and work. But once you learn to read labels, you realize how much control you actually have.
You get to choose what fuels your family’s bodies. You get to set the example. And guess what? You don’t have to be perfect to make a big impact.
When I first started, we didn’t go all organic. We didn’t cook every meal from scratch. We just made better choices, one box at a time and before long, those small changes added up to big health (and energy) wins.
Keep Going, Mama!
You’ve got this. Reading food labels might feel overwhelming at first, but soon you’ll be flipping packages like a pro. You’ll start spotting those tricky ingredients in seconds and that’s the power of awareness.
And don’t worry, I’ve got your back! Mid-week, I’ll share some label-reading cheat sheets and snack swap ideas to make this challenge easier (and a little more fun).
So, grab your glasses, hit the pantry, and start uncovering what’s really in your food. You’re learning skills that will serve you and your family for a lifetime.
