Today we are talking all about delicious hummus. But first………what is hummus? Hummus is a Middle Eastern and Arabic dip or spread which starts with cooked and crushed chickpeas. Then the chick peas are blended with lemon juice, olive oil, tahini, garlic, and salt. That’s it. Super easy to make and only a few ingredients. Hummus is also easy to flavor in a variety of ways. It’s versatility is what makes hummus the perfect base to many recipes.
One of my favorite discoveries when I changed my family’s diet to real food is hummus. The first time I tried it, I fell in love. I became obsessed with eating that stuff on everything! From simple snacks to more elaborate meals, I wanted to try adding hummus. Everything tastes better with hummus became my mantra. As usual, my family thought I was a bit crazy. That is…………until they started to enjoy my hummus obsession too. Today, I am sharing some of my favorite hummus discoveries. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. Each dish is delicious and full of lots of great nutrition.
7 Amazing Uses for Hummus
Hummus with warm pita, veggies, or whole wheat crackers: Makes a great snack or snacky lunch.
Use as a topping for hamburgers: I love a good grass-fed beef hamburger. Top it with lots of grilled veggies and hummus and the simple burger is at a whole new level of delicious!
Whole Wheat Pasta Topping: Toss hummus with hot cooked whole wheat pasta and season with salt and cracked black pepper. Mix in some grilled veggies like zucchini, onions, and mushrooms and then sprinkle with freshly grated parmesan cheese. So good!
Chicken and Veggie Wraps: Slather hummus on a whole wheat wrap and top with warm grilled chicken and grilled veggies. I also like a cold version with cold grilled chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, black olives, and feta cheese.
Hummus Flatbread Pizza: This is similar to the wrap above. Slather the hummus on your favorite whole wheat flatbread and then add toppings like chicken, veggies, feta or mozzarella cheese. Bake for about 10-12 minutes and your delicious meal is served.
Portobello Mushrooms: Grill, broil or sauté Portobello mushroom caps and then top with a few teaspoons of hummus. Easy and satisfying.
Devilled Eggs: Hummus can be used almost anywhere you would use mayo or sour cream. Horseradish hummus mixed in to devilled eggs is fantastic!
