Make Your Child’s Room Merry and Bright: Simple Christmas Decorating Ideas for Kids

Affiliate disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This helps support the work of Juggling Real Food and Real Life — thank you!

There’s something extra magical about Christmas through a child’s eyes. From twinkling lights to cozy pajamas and the smell of cookies in the air — everything feels a little more special. So why not bring some of that holiday wonder right into your child’s bedroom this year? Decorating their room for Christmas is a fun, simple way to make the season feel even more exciting and it doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money. I just love seeing the joy in my kids’ eyes on the day we decorate their bedroom for Christmas. It really is one of my favorite days of the year. It’s also awesome motivation for them to get their room cleaned.

Here are a few easy ways to turn your child’s room into a Christmas wonderland — using affordable and adorable finds from Amazon. I’ve also found great finds at Target, TJ Maxx, Wal-Mart and even Aldi for the kids’ rooms. Keep your eye out for great finds or simply “add to cart”.

1. Add Cozy Christmas Bedding

Swapping out regular bedding for a Christmas-themed set instantly transforms the room. Think soft flannel sheets, playful patterns, and cheerful colors. Choose a fun Christmas theme to keep the room looking more put-together. I like to keep my kids’ personalities in mind when we choose a theme for their room.

Try these:

  • Christmas Sheet Set – A soft flannel sheet set with reindeer, snowmen, or classic red plaid makes bedtime extra cozy. Amazon
  • Holiday Comforter Set – Look for a reversible set — festive on one side, simple on the other — so it lasts all winter. Amazon
  • Christmas Throw Blanket – Add a fluffy blanket with snowflakes or Santa prints for those chilly December nights. Amazon

2. Set Up a Mini Christmas Tree

A small tree gives your child their very own space to decorate — and it’s perfect for those handmade ornaments and special keepsakes from school.

Try these:

  • Pre-Lit Mini Christmas Tree – These come in 2–4 ft sizes and are perfect for desks or dresser tops. Amazon
  • Battery-Operated Fairy Lights – Safe for kids’ rooms and easy to place anywhere. Amazon
  • Mini Ornament Set – Choose lightweight, shatterproof ornaments so kids can decorate safely. Amazon

Let your child hang ornaments, string paper garland, or even make their own little star for the top!

3. Add Magical Lighting

Nothing says “Christmas” like a warm, twinkling glow. Adding a few lights can make bedtime feel cozy and magical.

Try these:

  • String Lights with Clips – Hang them along the wall to display Christmas cards or photos. Amazon
  • LED Snowflake Projector – A soft light that projects falling snowflakes on the ceiling — pure magic for little dreamers. Amazon
  • Nightlight with a Christmas Scene – Keeps the room festive and comforting at bedtime.

4. Hang a Christmas Countdown

Kids love to see how close Christmas is getting! Add a little anticipation with a fun countdown.

Try these:

  • Wooden Christmas Countdown Calendar – A cute tabletop option your child can change each morning. Amazon
  • Advent Calendar with Surprises – Fill with small toys, stickers, or holiday treats for daily excitement. You can fill a calendar with surprises or try a ready-made Advent Calendar. Amazon and Amazon

5. Sprinkle in Small Holiday Touches

A few little details go a long way toward making the room feel festive.

Try these:

  • Christmas Pillow Covers – Swap out regular pillows for reindeer, Santa, or Christmas tree designs. Amazon
  • Holiday Wall Decals – Easy to apply and remove, perfect for windows, doors, or walls. Amazon
  • Christmas-Scented Diffuser or Candle (for older kids) – Choose a cinnamon or pine scent to fill the room with Christmas cheer. Amazon

6. End the Night with Christmas Storytime

Don’t forget the magic of a bedtime story. Stack a few favorite Christmas books in a basket by the bed. If you’ve been doing 25 Days of Beautifully Wrapped Christmas Books, this is the perfect spot for those nightly surprises!

Try these classics:

  • The Polar Express Amazon
  • How the Grinch Stole Christmas Amazon
  • Bear Stays Up for Christmas Amazon

Bringing the Magic Home

Decorating your child’s room for Christmas is such a sweet way to make the season feel even more special. With just a few simple touches — cozy bedding, twinkling lights, and a mini tree of their own — you can create a space filled with warmth, wonder, and holiday cheer. These little moments of magic are what childhood memories are made of.
